Bridgeport Hospital (BH) is an acute care teaching hospital in the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) which includes 6 patient care centers. BH provides a wide range of clinical services including cardiology, pulmonology, women’s health, pediatrics, psychiatry (adult, adolescent and geriatric), oncology, and is the site of Connecticut’s only dedicated Burn Center, one of our 4 intensive care units (ICU). Bridgeport is located on the shoreline of Connecticut, an hour from New York City and 2 hours from Boston.

Ensures appropriate drug selection, rational drug therapy, and accurate drug distribution for hospital inpatients and outpatients. Serves as drug information resources for patients and health care professionals. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



  • The emergency medicine pharmacist is responsible for:

    • Respond to codes, medical and trauma team alerts in ED
    • drug therapy management for assigned medical/cardiac ICU and cardiology patients
    • performing pharmacist responsibilities as outlined by pharmacist protocols (e.g. IV to Enteral, renal dose adjustment, aminoglycoside and vancomycin protocols, anticoagulation and others)
    • interpretation of clinical and pharmacokinetic lab data
    • providing drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals
    • providing inservice education to pharmacy staff, including residents, students and interns
    • demonstrating effective oral and written communication skills
    • counsel patients in the ED as needed
    • precepting pharmacy students and PGY-1 residents
    • assist with oversight of Medication History Technicians
    • demonstrating leadership with active participation on an interdisciplinary hospital or YNHHS committee
    • meeting Regulatory and Safety Quality Compliance
    • overseeing the drug distribution process, assuring accurate and timely dispensing of drugs to patients via pharmacy systems


    The YNHHS - BH Department of Pharmacy offers career advancement with a Career Ladder, supports staff professional development and ongoing education, and scholarly activities.

    As BH is affiliated with 6 schools of pharmacy, there are opportunities for teaching and precepting IPPE and APPE students. In addition, BH is in its inaugural year of initiating a PGY-1 Residency Program. Precepting PGY-1 Residents on emergency medicine rotation is expected.


EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S., M.S., or Pharm.D. degree.


EXPERIENCE: Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency and PGY2 Emergency Medicine pharmacy residency OR equivalent experience (4 post-graduate years in area of practice specialty) is preferred.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Active Connecticut Pharmacist License. Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification, BLS and ACLS are preferred.
